Artist: Donna Meeks
My first formal art lessons were a gift from my parents in 7 th grade. We did not have much money so for my parents to buy oil paints and brushes and pay three dollars every Saturday for a lesson from 9-12:00 validated my love for art.
Capturing the beauty of God’s creation or trying to express
a concept from God’s word are the motivations behind my
art. The endless variety of subjects and methods keep me
intrigued and constantly learning. The act of taking
unusual objects, broken or torn things and putting them
into an order that is a new whole is a profound truth in
itself. I hope you can join me in seeing beyond the surface
and explore the metaphors of life in my work.
...More About Donna
I graduated with a degree in fine arts as well as art education from Stetson University in 1982. I received an Outstanding Senior Award upon graduation.
Following graduation I taught school and began my own family. Although art took a back seat in my life while I raised my family and homeschooled my five children I always made a space to paint and create. In 1995 I began teaching art classes in my home and eventually opened my own studio in DeLand, Florida. I loved encouraging children and adults to find their artistic voice and boldly try new mediums as well as helping them become confident in art basics. Along the way I discovered a love for collage and the combining of beautiful and unusual papers and items in unique pieces of art. Of course sometimes I just crave the thick paint of acrylic or the transparency of watercolor.
My paintings and creations are in homes and churches internationally and in several states. Because I have not had to “support” myself with my art I have been free to pursue where my heart leads me.
After my husband and I adopted two children in 2013 I closed my studio in order to homeschool once again. That parenting journey is nearing an end and in 2024 we decided to move to the beautiful state of Tennessee. The mountains have provided fresh inspiration and opportunity to pursue my art wholeheartedly once again.
