Artist: Barbara Parkinson

My art began in photography. I love the simple complexity of nature. The sight of a leaf falling from a tree can surround the viewer with a vision so powerful that the emotion is captured in memory forever, or just remind them that fall is near.

...More About Barbara

In 2002,, making a motorcycle part out of aluminum, I noticed the way metal reacted to the different hammers and sandpapers and wondered if I could create a picture out of metal that captured what I experienced through a lens.

My work aims to convey the simplicity found within complex forms, both in framed pieces and sculpture, ushering in the beginning of what I call "Art in Aluminum."

When selecting subject matter, I often start with an aesthetically shaped piece of metal that captures my interest. As I manipulate and work with the metal, a directional vision emerges. Though the path may twist and turn, clarity eventually unfolds, guiding me to the final piece.

I am particularly drawn to scenes that integrate the simple complexity of natural shapes. There is an inherent elegance in these forms that consistently captivates me.

My inspiration stems from a blend of natural, industrial, and aesthetic shapes. These elements compel me to transform intricate designs into visions of simplicity, offering viewers a unique convergence of form and function.

In my technique, I commit to an "old school" methodology with minimal reliance on machines. My primary medium, 6061 Aluminum, provides a versatile canvas allowing for varied textures, shines, and welds. Each creation is one of a kind, meticulously cut, filed, and sanded by hand using refurbished old tools or ones I have designed myself.

Each piece stands as a testament to my devotion to craftsmanship, capturing a harmonious balance between complexity and simplicity.

I've been fortunate to have received many awards including one from Western PA's Nature Art Showcase which helps to support the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail. I sold works, and won numerous awards in WI along with helping to curate exhibits for a non-profit gallery in Kenosha. In 2021, I moved to Tennessee just off the Appalachian Trail and continue to explore nature straight from my backyard.

My art currently is shown at August Muse, Elizabethton, TN, Victorian City Art and Frames, Franklin, PA and Art Depot, Abington VA.
